Itsy Bitsy Yoga ™ - Infant and Toddler Yoga, Offered to the Community

Debra Lee Wilson is passionate about teaching Infant and Tots Itsy Bitsy Yoga® at the Main St. Center
in Parker, CO. Debra finds the increase in childhood obesity alarming. She thinks that the Itsy Bitsy
Yoga classes she teaches for infants, toddlers and their parents is one way she can contribute to the
fight against childhood obesity by providing parents with information and introducing children to a more
healthy way of life right from the beginning.

One of the factors for the increase in childhood obesity is the lack of physical activity. Infants are often
confined in strollers, car seats, and bouncers in order to keep them safe. However, even infants need
unconfined physical activity. The National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE)
recommends that infants have daily physical activity that includes unconfined interaction with a parent
or caregiver where the focus is on the development of movement skills. NASPE recommends that
toddlers have thirty minutes of accumulated structured physical activity in addition to several hours of
unstructured physical activity on a daily basis. NASPE also recommends that toddlers are not to be
sedentary for more than sixty minutes during the time they are awake. Itsy Bitsy Yoga is a loving and
non-competitive way to provide your infant or toddler with the recommended physical activity.

Itsy Bitsy Yoga® was founded in 1999 by Helen Garabedian, a Registered Yoga Teacher and Infant
Developmental Movement Educator. The Itsy Bitsy Yoga program includes more than 75 calming and
nurturing yoga poses and techniques for babies from 3 weeks to 24 months old that are
developmentally nutritious and deepen the bond between parent and child. Debra teaches Itsy Bitsy
Yoga to two different age groups: infant — birth to pre-crawling and toddlers — crawlers to age twenty-
four months. The infant classes focus on poses to increase bonding between parent and child, improve
and lengthen baby's sleep, improve digestion, reduce gas, encourage movement, and Magic Poses SM
help stop a baby from crying!
The Itsy Bitsy Yoga class for toddlers has all the same benefits of the infant class, but has more active
yoga poses. For example, "Upside Down Yogi" is fun for both the parent and child, while benefiting the
child's entire nervous system and providing the brain with a fresh supply of oxygen-rich blood.

Parents will learn skills to gently guide their infants through healthy developmental movements.
Parents of toddlers will learn simple yoga positions that they will first gently guide their toddler through,
then parents will demonstrate the pose with their own bodies to encourage the toddler to do the pose
independently. After several classes most toddlers will begin to do the pose all on their own. It really is
exciting when you see toddlers begin to practice these healthy body movements independently.

Parents do not need to have yoga experience to get the full benefit of the classes. During each class
Debra describes how to do each pose and the benefits of the pose. Debra Wilson is very excited about
being able to offer Itsy Bitsy Yoga classes to the community so that parents can delight in practicing
yoga, discovering movement, and singing Itsy Bitsy Yoga rhymes. Another benefit of the class is for
parents to meet other like-minded parents so that long lasting memories and friendships can be made
both inside and outside of class.

Helen Garabedian's book, Itsy Bitsy Yoga: Poses to Help Your Baby Sleep Longer, Digest Better and
Grow Stronger was recently released by Fireside/Simon & Schuster. The Itsy Bitsy Yoga program has
been recognized by USA Today, ABC, CBS, and NBC News, MSNBC, CNN, Baby Years Magazine,
and Yoga Journal. Debra completed specialized training in Itsy Bitsy Yoga with Helen Garabedian in
2003.
